But let's start from the beginning:

What are the causes of oily hair?

Oily hair is actually caused by a “problem” with the scalp. It's actually just a luxury problem, but it has a big effect.

The scalp produces the amount of oil that the hair actually needs - it is also called sebum, but the scalp produces too much of it.

The so-called sebaceous glands are located in the scalp, directly at the hair roots. Their job is to produce fat, which protects the skin and hair from drying out and external influences. It also gives the hair suppleness and shine.

Oily hair is the result of increased oil production in the scalp.

The causes of increased sebum production can be very different. However, the most common causes are:

  • Washing your hair too often

  • Incorrect hair care

  • Hormonal fluctuations (e.g. due to pregnancy or puberty)

  • Stressful life situations

  • Some medications have the side effect of increasing sebum production

  • Unhealthy diet

Very often it is due to an incorrect hair care routine. Many conventional shampoos contain silicones, polyquaternium and other chemicals that only care for the hair superficially. These chemical substances usually have a drying effect. It works in the short term, but the sebaceous glands are stimulated again to produce more fat. This closes the vicious circle and you can no longer get out of your daily hair washing routine.

For the sake of the environment, you should also stay away from such shampoos. The silicones they contain, and very often the microplastics, are very difficult to break down.
Natural hair soaps are a better, natural and environmentally friendly alternative represents.

Here are our tips that you must adopt into your habits to finally win the battle against oily hair:

Tip 1: Avoid too much heat

Any activity that warms the scalp leads to increased sebum production.

First of all, you should not wash your hair with hot water. Wash your hair only with lukewarm water. Avoid heating styling methods such as straightening and curling your hair. You should also avoid hot blow-drying. It's best to just air dry your hair.

Tip 2: Make sure your hair care routine is as mild and as natural as possible

You should avoid products with strong synthetic substances. Although you will get the desired result in the short term, in the long term you will cause enormous damage to the structure of your hair and the health of your scalp. You should make sure that you use shampoos without silicones, sulfates and parabens. Surfactants such as SLS, SLES, ALS, etc. should also be avoided.

As an alternative, there are a number of natural shampoos and natural hair soaps that do not contain any chemical ingredients.

There are many natural ingredients that effectively counteract oily hair. Just a few examples include tea tree oil , nettle , rosemary , sage and activated charcoal . These active ingredients remove oil from the hair roots and naturally regulate the oil production of the sebaceous glands.

You should also always wash your hair in the morning if possible. The sebaceous glands work particularly actively overnight and the friction on the pillow causes the oil to be distributed more quickly through the hair.

Tip 3: Use a comb

Use a brush to distribute the grease in your hair even more. Better use a comb. It is very important that you clean the comb regularly so that no dirt or styling residue builds up.

Tip 4: Avoid massaging the scalp

If you have oily hair, avoid massaging your scalp too hard with your fingers when applying shampoo. This can otherwise stimulate the scalp's sebum production.

Extensive combing and massage while drying also promote blood circulation in the scalp and thus oil production.

Tip 5: Avoid washing your hair every day

Washing your hair too often increases the overproduction of sebum. If you're used to washing your hair every day because it gets greasy very quickly, the change can be difficult. However, giving up washing your hair frequently is the best thing you can do. Your hair should be washed a maximum of two to three times a week.

The change is best done gradually. In the beginning, you can only wash your hair every two days. After a few weeks, when your hair gets used to it, you can reduce washing to every three days.

This way you will let your scalp do its natural, self-regulating sebum production.

Tip 6: Use acidic rinse

When using natural shampoos, shampoo bars or hair soaps, it is often necessary to rinse with the so-called acid rinse. Rinsing with this natural conditioner is also recommended for hard water. The acidic rinse is made with vinegar or lemon. Both are proven home remedies for greasy hair, remove sebum from the scalp and bring the pH value back into balance.

Tip 7: Pay attention to a healthy diet

And last but not least, a balanced diet is very important. Sweet foods and drinks stimulate sebum production. An alkaline diet and drinking plenty of water prevent greasy hair. We don't need to explain the numerous other benefits of a healthy eating plan here.
